about

"from a graceful ballad... to something that sounds like a Captain Beefheart shakedown..."
-R. Doull, BC Musician Magazine

“Woah! Where have you been hiding, Jon Miller Quartet? ...on behalf of sun-deprived Canadians everywhere, thanks for this much needed dose of Vitamin D.”
-Robert Rowat, CBC Music

With this outing the Quartet continues to mine a predominantly acoustic instrumental jazz vein while incorporating influences from sources both within and outside the jazz realm including strains of fusion, blues and improvised music. Covering a wide range of moods from meditative and introspective to raucous and freewheeling, this new recording teams the lively upright bass and drums combo of Miller and James Young with the dynamic playing of Monik Nordine on saxes and one of the area's finest jazz guitarists, Rob Cheramy.

The disc opener is Miller's odd-meter blues entitled "Vitamin D." With an opening vamp reminiscent of Miles Davis' "All Blues" or possibly Paul Demond's "Take Five," this tune also includes elements borrowed in a non-obvious way from two unlikely sources, K C Douglas and Robert Geddins' "Mercury Blues" and "If You Want me to Stay" by Sly Stone. Miller's other compositions on this recording are the meditative "When and Where" and the 60's jazz fusion-infused album closer "Protected."

New for this recording is a more democratic sharing of composing credits among band members including two new compositions by the extremely prolific guitarist Rob Cheramy: "Through the Fog" which bears an ECM influence, and the rock-guitar driven "Goin' Downtown." Saxophonist Monik Nordine's contributions are the beautiful ballad "Deja Vu" and a medium tempo bossa based on Bill Evans' "Time Remembered" entitled "White Jade." From the pen of bassist extraordinaire James Young come two compositions from different ends of the spectrum with "OddBall" being the most straight-ahead jazz tune of the entire set, while the playful "Punk Bunk" incorporates elements of free improvisation and an unconventional approach to playing the upright bass using the wooden surface of the bow.
